Chris Oppong FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Gen Surg)
Chris Oppong FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Gen Surg) is currently the Chairman of Operation Hernia. He was one of the two co-founders of Operation Hernia along with its former CEO, Professor Andrew Kingsnorth. Over the last 10 years Chris has organised almost 60 Operation Hernia missions and led many of the teams of volunteers. Chris is currently a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, UK and also an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a former Director of Cancer Services for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. Chris is originally from Ghana, is married with three adult children and is an elder at Mutley Baptist Church in Plymouth.
Roger Watkins MChir, FRCS
Roger Watkins (MChir, FRCS) was a Consultant Surgeon at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for more than 20 years. During that time he visited the Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf, Egypt on an annual basis undertaking a wide range of surgical procedures and teaching the resident doctors. Now retired from NHS Practice, Roger continues to work in Private Practice and is involved in teaching medical students at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and the General Medical Council (GMC) and also a medical performance assessor for the GMC. In West Africa he has visited The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Ghana. In the last six years he has undertaken four missions to Ghana with Operation Hernia and two to Sierra Leone with Better Lives Foundation. He has also undertaken training of surgeons in Uganda.
Della is the latest addition to the trustees, joining the team in 2016. Della is a Theatre Sister at Derriford hospital, Plymouth, where she has worked for over 25 years. She oversees several operating theatres and specialises in neurosurgery. Della has been on several missions to Rwanda acting as a senior scrub member and also helping to train local staff on good practice in the operating theatres.
