The Ghana Hernia Society is an indepenedent organisation of hernia surgeons in Ghana. The President of the Society is Prof Michael Ohene Yeboah. The society has embarked on a national programme to train doctors in the district hospitals in appropriate hernia surgery.

The Partnership with Operation Hernia
In May 2019, Operation Hernia entered into partnership with the Ghana Hernia Society to support the national hernia training programme by sourcing much needed sponsorship, and where appropriate, by providing trainers to support the excellent Ghanaian trainers.
Sponsorship by AGM Petroleun Ghana Limited
Operation Hernia has a very important partnership with AGM Petroleum Ghana Limited, through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project which aims at improving the health of Ghanaians through improved access to treatment of their hernias. As part of the CSR, AGM has since 2019 provided sponsorship for the hernia training programmes.

Objectives of the GHS Hernia Training Programme
1. The primary objective of the Hernia Training program is capacity building, to tackle the high prevalence of hernias in Ghana and the low rate of better surgical treatment. This is achieved through adequate transfer of safe hernia surgical skills to the Medical Officers in district hospitals.
2. The secondary objective is to reinforce acceptable levels of best theatre practices; theater safety and record keeping.
Expected Outcome
1. A significant increase in the pool of appropriately trained Ghanaian doctors who deliver quality treatment of hernias using currently recommended and sustainable techniques.
2. An increase in the elective repair of hernias which would reduce the incidence of complications of hernias which have an unacceptably high death rate.
3. Improvement in the quality of health of Ghanaians which would hopefully equate to improvement in domestic and community economy.
